The sexual process of Schizosaccharomyces japonicus consists of sexual flocculation, zygote formation, eight-spored ascus formation and liberation of spores from the ascus. The culture medium in which this sexual process took place synchronously was prepared. For the completion of the sexual process, glucose was essential and inorganic salts and vitamins were also required. Elimination of the nitrogen source stimulated the rate of spore formation. The temporal relationship among the sexual events was also elucidated: sexual flocculation, zygote formation, ascus formation and spore liberation occurred at 4, 7, 13 and 20 hr, respectively, after transfer to the medium for the synchronous sexual process.
