Germ-tube emergence took place at almost the same time as DNA synthesis during spore germination in the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Neither the emergence nor the elongation of the germ-tubes was inhibited by hydroxyurea. Spores harboring a temperature-sensitive cdc 10 mutation produced germ-tubes even at a restrictive temperature, which indicates that germ-tube formation is not dependent on DNA synthesis.
