Amputation of the abdomen of the adult cabbage butterflies causes them to exhibit hyperphagia when offered various sugar solutions, both as regards duration of proboscis extension and the volume ingested. The degree of hyperphagia differed between sugars and between concentrations of the same sugar. Ranking of sugar solutions according to degree of hyperphagia as assessed by the duration of proboscis extension did not entirely correspond with ranking based on amount ingested. The relationship between rate of ingestion and time after the beginning of ingestion by operated butterflies differed between sugar solutions. Operated butterflies did not show hyperphagia to distilled water. Based on these results, and those obtained in earlier studies, mechanisms for regulation of meal size and duration in the cabbage butterfly are discussed.
