The Histochemistry of Papillae in the Rat Tongue by Scanning Electron Microscope X-Ray Microanalysis

The present experiments attempted to establish a morphological and histochemical basis for the surface structure of the taste epithelium of the tongue through histochemical study by SEM and EDX. Morphological structure and pore size of the taste pore in the fungiform and the circumvallate papillae are described. Elemental analysis by SEM and EDX revealed the presence of P, S, Cl, K and Ca on the surface of the fungiform and the conical filiform papillae. Furthermore, potassium (K)-Kα was abundantly present on the fungiform and the circumvallate papillae at the same level as sulfur (S)-Kα. While calcium (Ca)-Kα in these papillae was uniformly dispersed, potassium was detectable on the fungiform papilla. On the pore in the fungiform papilla, calcium (Ca)-Kα, -Kβ and potassium (K)-Kα were highly detectable.
