It was found that the haemolymph amylase activity in armyworm, Mamestra brassicae is due to the serum and no activity was detected in the haemocytes. The haemolymph amylase during larval development showed high activity at the stage of feeding and very low activity at the stages of moulting and non-feeding after gut-purge. During pupal stage, the haemolymph amylase activity increased again and maintained high level. Furthermore, results suggesting a close relationship between the amylase activity of haemolymph and the progress of pupation process in the late last larval instrar stage were obtained. Enzymatic properties of the haemolymph amylase in M. brassicae are rather similar to those of the midgut amylase than the haemolymph amylase in Bombyx mori.
