(1) Sucrose in solution was hydrolyzed by the contact with the proboscis or tarsi either of the intact cabbage butterfly or when isolated. The sugar-splitting activity of the proboscis was greater than that of the tarsi. The homogenate of the proboscises of the cabbage butterfly was more active than that of tarsi. The substrate specificity and the products of hydrolysis for carbohydrases contained in the homogenates of proboscises suggest that the proboscis homogenates contain β-fructosidase and trehalase. (2) The optimum pH for the enzymatic hydrolysis of sucrose (β-fructosidase) by the homogenate of the proboscis was 6.1 to 6.2, and the Km and Vmax values for this preparation were 1.8×10^<-1> M and 1.92×10^<-1> M, respectively. (3) The sucrose-splitting activity in the intact legs or cut tarsi or homogenates of proboscises in the cabbage butterfly increased with increasing number of days of starvation. (4) A relationship between a sugar receptor on both the tarsi and the proboscis in the cabbage butterfly and sugar-splitting activity of β-fructosidase contained in these tissues was discussed.
