Drosophila nigromaculata and D. brachynephros have nearly identical annual life cycles in Sapporo, northern Japan; appearing from early May, passing through mainly three, partially four, generations per year, entering reproductive diapause from mid September, and entering hibernation from mid November. However, a slight interspecific difference is detected in the timing of reproductive maturation of the post-hibernating generation. And, each species changes specifically its breeding and feeding habits in different seasons. These inter-and intraspecific variations in phenology are considered to be reflecting seasonal changes in availability of different kinds of food resources.
