The annual life cycles of Drosophila auraria and D. biauraria were studied by checking the ovarian development in natural populations and by rearing under nearly natural conditions of photoperiod and temperature in a greenhouse. These two species pass mainly four, and partially three, generations per year in Sapporo. Adults of both species emerging after late September enter reproductive diapause. Their adaptation to the seasonal conditions of Hokkaido is discussed, particularly in relation to their geographic distribution and ecology.
