The annual life cycle of Drosophila testacea was studied by analysis of female reproductive conditions throughout the active season at different altitudes near Sapporo, northern Japan. This species passes through three, sometimes two, generations per year at low altitudes (below 350m) in central Hokkaido. The post-hibernating generation (G_h) appears from late April, and thereafter three generations, G_<1∿3>, are repeated till the end of the fly season in early November. G_3 and the last part of G_2 enter the reproductive diapause from early September, i.e., G_h=(G_2)+G_3. At high altitudes (above 800m) the fly season begins in mid or late July with the migration of G_1 from the lowland. Thereafter breeding is performed only once, in August. Their offspring (G_2) being to emerge from mid August, and enter the diapause about two or three weeks earlier than in the lowlands. They may or may not migrate downwards to the lowlands.
