The annual life cycles of Drosophila ezoana and D. kanekoi were studied by checking the ovarian development in natural populations, and the former's life cycle was studied further by rearing under nearly natural conditions of photoperiod and temperature in a greenhouse. Both species are multivoltine, and enter reproductive diapause in autumn for hibernation in central Hokkaido. Though the flies of D. ezoana emerging after early October in a greenhouse enter reproductive diapause, this onset of diapause is later than those of other wild drosophilid species. Post-hibernating flies of both species appeared in April. Their appearance was earlier than those of other waterside drosophilid species. These suggest that D. ezoana is adapted to the cold temperature climate. Furthermore, surveys on their breeding sites were performed. Many flies of both species emerged from the rotting bark of willow.
