Physiology of Reproductive Diapause in Drosophila auraria : Photoperiod and Temperature as Controlling Factors

Drosophila auraria passes the winter in the adult stage in a reproductive diapause. In the laboratory the diapause is induced by a short daylength before eclosion, and the critical daylength falls between 12 hr. and 14 hr. The diapause development occurs and eventually is completed even under short day conditions. A lower temperature maintains the diapause longer under short day conditions. The diapause is rapidly terminated in continuous illumination.
