Vertical microdistribution of the drosophilid flies from the ground to forest canopy was investigated in a "Japan sea-type beech forest". In this beech forest two drosophilid associations were distinguished : canopy association and forest floor association. Canopy association was composed of 16 species ; D. unipectinata, D. coracina, D. pengi, D. suzukii, L. quinquemaculipennis, A. kappa, D. helvetica, D. bifasciata, D. pulchrella, D. imaii, D. curviceps, D. annulipes, D. lutescens, A. furcata, A. stylopyga and A. conifera, and the following 12 species constituted forest floor association ; D. bizonata, D. immigrans, D. makinoi, D. testacea, D. sternopleuralis, D. moriwakii, D. pseudosordidula, D. unispina, D. histrio, D. confusa, D. angularis and D. kuntzei. These two kinds of associations were also seen in the natural broad-leaved forest in Hokkaido, and common species seen in both types of forests showed similar microdistribution patterns in these two types of forests. As no collection records of 7 (D. pulchrella, D. sternopleuralis, D. angularis, D. annulipes, D. curviceps, A. conifera and A. promissa) of species collected in this survey have been seen till now in the southwestern part of Hokkaido where "Japan sea-type beech forest" is also seen, limit of geographical distribution of such drosophilid species would be affected not by a type of the climax forest, but by climatic conditions such as temperature and daylength.
