Experiments to induce non-delayed eusociality, which is found in over 90% of social insects, failed in the univoltine Ceratina japonica but succeeded in the multivoltine C. okinawana. Both species are normally solitary. In the latter species, the coexistence of consistently solitary life and non-delayed eusociality was confirmed in the same locality. This is the first authentic record of the compatibility of two life cycles within the same population of insects. Comments are given on distinction between delayed and non-delayed eusociality and on some related items.
