Nomada japonica as a Thelytokous Cleptoparasitic Bee, with Notes on Egg Size and Egg Complement in Some Cleptoparasitic Bees

Nomada japonica is an obligate thelytokous bee at least in the mainlands of Japan where no male has been recorded. All 119 females examined were unfertilized even ovarially developed. The spermatheca of N. japonica is significantly smaller than in other congeneric species. The number of ovarioles per ovary is 5 : 5 in all examined Nomada species and Triepeolus ventralis while 6 : 6 in Epeolus sp., 4 : 4 in Thyreus decorus and 3 : 3 in other cleptoparasitic bees examined (Sphecodes, Coelioxys and Euaspis). In all these cleptoparasites negative correlation between egg size and egg complement is recognized among congeners, but all Nomada species are characterized by the smaller egg size, probably reflecting the performance of multiple ovipositions.
