The effects of photoperiod and temperature on nymphal development were investigated to understand the seasonal life-cycle strategy of a nymph-overwintering cricket Velarifictorus parvus in Ibaraki, Japan. In an ecologically relevant range of photoperiod, this cricket showed a long-day response : nymphs grew rapidly in long photoperiods (15-16h), and slowly in short photoperiods (12-14h) due to the induction of diapause at mid instars. At least two types of response were recognized : one was an all-or-none type in which nymphs developed either with or without diapause in the same photoperiod, and the other a graded type in which the intensity of diapause varied in proportion to the length of photoperiod. The number of nymphal instars was greater in short photoperiods than in long ones. Among crickets experiencing diapause, no positive correlation was found between the duration of nymphal development and adult body size. Mid-instar nymphs in diapause resumed rapid development at any time upon transfer to a long photoperiod. However, nymphs exposed to a long photoperiod only for the first 7 days failed to enter diapause even after transfer to a short photoperiod. Crickets collected in late autumn and kept outdoors until early winter were all nymphs ranging from the 3rd to the last (7th-10th) instar. However, instar composition of overwintering populations was rather stable between years, which appears to be achieved by their complicated response to photoperiod and temperature during the nymphal stage. This species did not decrease the supercooling point for overwintering.
