Effect of D_2O on Locomotor Activity Rhythm in the Onion Fly, Delia antiqua

When the onion fly, Delia antiqua, drank D_2O (10, 30 or 50%) in LD12 : 12, the phase of locomotor activity delayed toward late photophase in a dose-dependent manner. With 30% D_2O, the phase was also delayed in LD14 : 10 and 16 : 8. The free-running period (τ) with D_2O increased in a dose-dependent manner in constant darkness (DD), suggesting that the phase delay of locomotor activity in LD cycles was caused by the increase in τ. With H_2O, the phase of locomotor activity occurred progressively later with age in LD cycles. The free-running rhythm also increased with age when the fly drank 50% D_2O. In LD cycles, however, D_2O (30% or 50%) did not cause any age-dependent phase delay of locomotor activity.
