The eggs of Metrioptera hime enter obligatory diapause. After a long period of chilling, they were able to hatch at 15℃, but failed to do so either at 25 or 20℃ in constant light or dark conditions. When they were exposed to daily photoperiods at 20℃, or to daily thermoperiods either in continuous light or in darkness, their hatchability increased greatly. Under such conditions, hatching was synchronized and showed a definite phase relationship to the daily cycle of light or temperature. When eggs were transferred to constant conditions from photoperiodic or thermoperiodic treatments, the hatching rhythm disappeared at once except the transference to constant 15℃ at which only one cycle of hatch persisted. As soon as the phase of the photoperiod was reversed, the hatching time became adjusted to the new cycle. When eggs were exposed to one or two light or temperature pulses, a few individuals hatched at the first light-on or temperature rise and many at the second one. It seemed that the hatching behaviour was triggered by a single stimulus of light-on or temperature rise and also that the time-measuring system was synchronized by the environmental cues. The time measurement for hatching was probably effected only once and there was little possibility of its coupling with any circadian system.
