When eggs of Metrioptera hime that had been kept at 15℃ were transferred to 25℃, the hatching behavior was directly triggered. In the reversed transfer, hatching occurred after about 10-12 hr in continuous darkness, and after about 6 hr in continuous light. A single stimulus of temperature fall thus determined the hatching time. When a high-temperature (25℃) pulse was given to those eggs that had been kept at 15℃, hatching occurred not only just after the temperature rise, but also about 12-14 and 6hr after the temperature fall in continuous darkness and in continuous light, respectively. When eggs were exposed to thermoperiods varied the rate of 25℃ and 15℃, the distribution of hatching nymphs varied with the duration of warm or cool phase. In continuous darkness, nymphs mainly hatched at around the temperature rise in most treatments, but with a warm phase shorter than 8hr, one hatching peak was observed within 2hr after the temperature rise and another about 12-14hr after the temperature fall. In continuous light, the mean hatching time (the temperature fall=hr 0) tended to be earlier, as the warm phase was lengthened. When the phase of thermoperiod was shifted, the hatching time was adjusted to the new cycle. Any evidence for the circadian oscillator determining the hatching time was not indicated. It seems that two time measuring systems triggered by temperature fall and rise, respectively, are involved, and that their reactions are influenced by light.
