Egg Hatching Rhythms of Eobiana engelhardti subtropica Bey-Bienko (Orthoptera : Tettigoniidae) under Non-24 h Thermoperiods

The timing mechanism of egg hatching was analyzed in a katydid, Eobiana engelhardti subtropica (formerly, Metrioptera hime), by exposing eggs to various non-24 h thermoperiods (25℃ : 15℃) in continuous darkness (DD) or light (LL). Eggs hatched in both warm (W) and cool (C) phases when both phases were 2 h (2W : 2C, W+C=T=4 h) in DD or LL. When W : C ratio was kept at 1 : 1 in DD, hatching concentrated within 2 h after temperature rise with T=8 or 36 h. Most hatching, however, occurred 8-12 h after temperature fall at T≧42 h. In LL, a hatching peak was observed after temperature rise at T 16 h and 4-8 h after temperature fall at T≧20 h. Therefore, the timing mechanism which determines the hatching time is most likely initiated by a temperature fall. No resonance effect was detected when either W or C was systematically changed. The mechanism controlling hatching in this species operates as an hourglass. However, the rate of hatching was affected by a circadian element, since it was significantlyc higher when T=24 h with C>8 h than when T≠24 h.
