When eggs of Metrioptera hime that had been kept in continuous light were transferred to darkness, they hatched at around 12-14 hr after light-off. A single stimulus of light-off therefore determined the hatching time. When exposed to various photoperiods of 24 hr cycle at 20 or 15℃, however, eggs mainly hatched within 2 hr after lights-on except for extremely long or short photoperiods. The hatchability within 2 hr after lights-on varied with the photoperiod and temperature. When the light-dark cycle was shifted for various phase angles, hatching in most cases was observed at the first light-on after the phase shift. When a 2-hr dark period was inserted after an extended light period, the number of hatch after the 2-hr dark period increased with the increasing duration of the preceding light period. This result suggested that the hatching time was also controlled by light period. It seems, therefore, that there are two time measuring systems triggered by light-off and light-on, respectively. From observation of the hatching time under various conditions, it was inferred that the former is an "inductive system" and the latter an "inhibitory system".
