With the use of a semi-analytic method, a detailed study is given of a nonlinearMathieu equation with particular emphasis on amplitude modtulations. This study ismotivated by the remarkable amplitude modulations observcrd in experiments onpararnetrmc amplification of surface waves (the Faraday instability). IT is shown thatamplitude modulations occur in general as a result of intermittent appearance of anoff-resonance state, which is due to the amplitude-dependence o I' the characteristic frequency. To suppress the appearance of the off-resonance state, 21 special phase controllaw is applied, and it is found that the amplitude continues to increase to a limitingvalue.Faraday instability, parametric excitation, nonlinear oscillation, phase control
