Does Muscle β-Actinin Affect the Ouabain Sensitivity of (Na, K)ATPase Activity of Cell Membranes?(Biochemistry)

It was reported that β-actinin-like protein regulates the ouabain sensitivity of (Na, K)ATPase activity of cell membranes of murine plasmacytoma cells (MF_2S) (Geny et al., 1982). In the present study, we could not detect the effects of muscle β-actinin using porcine erythrocyte membranes, dog kidney outer medulla microsomes and cell membranes of cultured Madin Darby canine kidney cells (MDCK). Furthermore, β-actinin-like proteins prepared from MDCK cells according to Geny et al. did not show any actions not only on the ouabain sensitivity of (Na, K)ATPase activity, but also on the reannealing of fragmented actin filaments. The latter process is inhibited by muscle β-actinin. It is concluded that muscle β-actinin is not related to the regulation of cell membrane (Na, K)ATPase activity.
