The fate of spermatozzoa not taking part in fertilization has generally been believed to be enzymatic dissolution and phagocytic engulfment by polymorphonuclear leucocytes in the vagina and uterus. In addition, it has been observed that some spermatozoa become incorporated into the uterine mucosa of the rabbit and two species of bats, and into the oviductal mucosa of the mouse etc. (Kohlbrugge, 1910, 1913). However, serious doubt as to the validity of such observations has been raised by Vajtiskova (1956). Nevertheless, Austin and Bishop (1959) and Austion (1959) have observed that some spermatozoa become incorporated into the uterine mucosa of the guinea pig, and into the oviductal mucosa of the rat, rabit, greater horseshoe bat, common pipistrellus bat, etc. In the present study, use of the electron microscope revealed that spermatozoa undergo phagocytosis by the epithelial cells of the Fallopian tube of the Japanese house bat. The epithelium of the Fallopian tube is dominated by two cell types, i.e., ciliated and nonciliated cells. The nonciliated cells may be subdivided into two forms, namely phagocytic and non-phagocytic cells; the former differ from the latter in being nearly devoid of microvilli. Phagocytosis begins with the formation of pseudopodial protrusions from the cell surface, and incorporated spermatozoa may be finally digested by lysosomes.
