In the larva of the salamander, Hynobius nigrescens, calcitonin-immunoreactive cells were found dispersed in the epithelia of the pharynx, esophagus and the approach to the trachea, in addition to the ultimo-branchial gland (UBG), where cells are known to normally exist. The time of appearance of the cells in the extra-UBG areas during larval development was synchronized with that of cells in the UBG. The total number of calcitonin-immunoreactive cells found in the extra-UBG areas was comparable to that of the cells composing the UBG.
