Administration of a brain extract from the bullfrog caused responses typical of calcitonin, hypocalcemia accompanied with hypophosphatemia, in rats. Neither muscle extract, acetylcholine, dopamine, noradrenaline nor serotonin had any effects on the serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus concentrations when administered to rats. These results suggest that immunohistochemically detected calcitonin in the bullfrog brain is a calcitonin which is physiologically active.
