SOLVENT EXTRACTION EQUILIBRIA OF FIVE DIVALENT METAL IONS WITH DIBENZOYLMETHANE

Acid dissociation and two phase distribution equilibria of dibenzoylmethane in four liquid-liquid systems as well as the extraction equilibria of five divalent transition metal ions with this chelating reagent into carbon tetrachloride have been determined at 298 K. When the aqueous phase was 1 mol dm^<-3> sodium perchlorate solution, pKa of the reagent was 8.57 and the liquidliquid distribution constant was 10^<3.9> to 10^<5.3>; it was greater in the order of the diluent, hexane < carbone tetrachloride < benzene < chloroform. The extraction constants of the metal ions into carbon tetrachloride was lO^<12.73, 10^<-13.40>, 10^<-3.86>, and 10-11.36! respectively with cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and zincII) but that with manganese(II) was not reproducible due to partial oxidation to its higher oxidation state. The results were compared with those with acetylacetone and benzoylacetone.
