TRANSIENT MAXIMUM OF SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF COPPER(II) WITH SOME β-DIKETONES IN CARBON TETRACHLORIDE

A transient maximum of solvent extraction of copper(II) in aqueous 1 mol dm^<-3> sodium perchlorate solutions with β-diketones in carbon tetrachloride has been observed after within 10 s of the start of two-phase agitation. This was concluded to be due to the higher rate of formation of the metal complexes than that of keto-enol tautomeric transition of the reagent in the aqueous phase. The rate constant of the ketonization of the β-diketone, k_<kz>, was determined by a liquid-liquid distribution method and the rate constant of the enolization, k_<ez>, was determined by a bromination method. The k_<kz> was 0.08, 0.5, 2.5 and 0.5 s^<-1> respectively for acetylacetone, trifluoroacetylacetone, hexafluoroacetylacetone and benzoyltrifluoroacetone at 298 K.
