Although the chemical changes involved in the lactic acid fermentation lear a close resemblance to those of muscle glycolysis, we can point out a striking difference between them in the optical property of the produced lactic acid; namely that of glycolysis is always dextro-form but that of the fermentation varies with the genus from d-and dl- to l-form.In pares previously published (1938-9) Katagiri and the present author reported that the lacticodehydrogenase can be classified into d- and l-types.(Lactic acid bacteria which produces d-lactic acid, posseses lacticodehy drogenax which can dehydrogenate only d-lactic acid and view versa)In this paper the author started from these results, and showed, because of the reversibility of the action of dehydrogenase, that the above mentioned characteristics of lactic acid bacteria are caused by d- and l-lacticodehydrogenases and racemiase.The last stage of Meyerhof's scheme is modified as follows.[figure](Heavy lines show the changes in the case of glycolysis.)
