ITOH, M., FUKUOKA, Y., ENDO, M. and NISHI, K., Effect of Locomotor Respiratory Coupling on Ventilatory and Metabollc Responses During Walking in Humans. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.2 pp.23-29, 2002. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of deliberately preferred coupling of respiratory thythm with limb locomotion movement, i.e., so-called locomotor-respiratory coupling (LRC), on ventilatory and metabolic responses during walking. Eight females and six males walked on a treadmikk at different speeds using 2 respiratory modes: spontaneous (SPNT) breathing and LRC breathing. During the experiments, the step length of the subject was fixed at 0.7m・step-1, and step frequencies were set at 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 and 130steps・min-1, which corresponded to the walking speed of 56, 63, 70, 77, 84 and 91m・min-1, respectively. Breath-by-breath pulmonary ventilation (VE), O2 uptake (Vo2), CO2 output (VCO2), breath frequency (bf), and tidal volume (VT) during waiking were determined by using a computer-based automated system. No significant difference in the oxygen requirement per 100m of walking distance (E; ml・kg-1・100m-1)between SPNT and LRC breathings was observed at all step frequencies, whereas a tendency towards a lowered end-tidal PCO2(PETCO2) and a higher VE were significantly observed under LRC breathing. The most economical step frequency identified (at which E showed a minimum value) appeared at 120steps・min-1 under both breathing modes, showing a significant differnece as compared with 80steps・min-1. These results might indicate that the delibcrately preferred LRC during walking has no positive effect on the energy requirement, despite a LRC-niduced small but insignificant increase of VE and subsequently a lowered PETCO2.
