MURAKI, S., TSUNAWAKE, N., and YAMASAKI, M., Difference in Cardiac Autonomic Control between Steady-state Arm Cranking and Leg Cycling in Women. Adv. Exerc. Sports Physilo., Voi.to, NO.4 pp93-99, 2004. At a given oxygen uptake (VOs), the heart rate HR) is higher during arm exercise than during leg exercise. This study examined the relationship between a higher HR and cardiac autonomic control during arm exercise at steady statem using power spectrum analysis of HR variability. Ten healthy feamales performde three-interinittent 10-min exercises on an arim cranking and leg cycling ergometer at 20, 40, and 60& of the mode-specific maximal powere output. The Vo2, resoitarory frequency (fR), and HR were measured for 5 min during rest and for the last 5 min during each exercise. Power sepctrum analysis of R-R intervals using fast Fourier transformation was performed to obtain the low frequency power (LF:0.05-0.15 Hz), the high frequency power (HF:0.15-Hz) and ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF). The increase in exercise intensity exponentially decreased LF and HF for both modes. At the same Vo2, singificantly higher HR and fR were observes during arm cranking. Furthermore arm cranking resulted in a significantly lower HF (parasympathetic indicator) and higher LF/HF (sympathetic indicator) than leg cycling at the same Vo2, although no differnce was found for LF between modes. Nevertheless, there was no differnce in the relationship of the HF with fR between modes. These results indicate that the lower HF was attributed to higher fR during arm cranking, and consequently resulted in a higher LF/HF. In conclusion, the present study does not support a connection between a higer HR and gerater ingerase in sympathetic activity during submaximal arm exercise at steady state.
