The yeast cell-lytic enzyme produced by a strain of Rhizoctonia was found to be a random-type β-1,3-glucanase producing oligosaccharides of relatively large molecular weight. The enzyme showed maximum lytic activity toward viable yeast cells at 40℃ and pH 6 to 7,and was stable at pH 5 to 6 and at temperatures below 60℃. Among various metal salts and enzyme inhibitors tested at a concentration of 10^<-4> M, HgCl_2 (70-80%), p-chloromercuribenzoate (50-60%) and N-bromosuccinimide (100%) showed prominent inhibition of the enzyme.
