An enzyme which degrades vegetative yeast cells has been purified and obtained in a crystalline form from the culture extract of a fungus tentatively identified as R.solani (no.589). The molecular weight and sedimentaion constant of the enzyme were estimated to be 27,000 and 2.68S, respectively. The enzyme.predominantly attacked the relatively large molecules of β-1,3-glucan and disrupted viable cells of Candida, Saccharomyces and Hansenula, but did not attack the viable cells of Tricosporon, Rhodotorula or Sporobolomyces. This disruption effect on the susceptible yeasts was enhanced by the addition of β-mervaptoethanol.An immunoprecipitin test between the antisera against the crystalline enzyme and extracts from the cultures of several species of Rhizoctonia or related fungi suggested the uniqueness of the structure of this yeast cell-lytic enzyme.
