A microorganism which produced viable yeast cell-lytic enzyme was isolated from a sheath spot on a rice plant. The organism was tentatively identified as Rhizoctomia solani. The organism produced lytic enzyme most abundantly at 22℃ on semi-solid wheat bran medium enriched with 0.5% (NH_4)_2SO_4 and 2% KH_2PO_4. The culture extract of the organism effectively lysed viable cells of Candida, Saccharomyces and Hansemula as well as lyophilized cells, but did not lyse those of Endomyces or Rhodotolura, and the extract also hyrdolysed various polysaccharides such as laminarin, pachyman, starch, cellulose and yeast glucan. The optimal conditions for cell lysis shown by the crude enzyme differed between viable yeast cells and lyophilized yeast cells.
