A wild type of the Gram-positive bacterium, Bacillus brevis, reduced polycyclic aromatic compounds such as 9-fluorenone to the corresponding alcohol, 9-hydroxyfluorene, at 30℃ in an anaerobic atmosphere in a 97% yield by extration with an organic solvent. The products could be also continuously isolated by dialysis from a flowing reaction solution.
