The optogalvanic signal has been observed in a Cs/Ne hollow cathode dischargetube by means of pulsed laser irradiation. The observed tinte dependence exhibitsevidence of the Penning ionization process in which the short-lived excited atomNe'(27t.) takes part: Ne'(27t.)-l-Cs=Ne-l-Cs"(5V)-fe. Observation also suggeststhe importance of the Penning process through the autoionizing states of Cs.optogalvanic effect, Penning ionization, Cs
