The Ground State of Quasi-One-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

We investigate the Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice with differentcoupling constants in two directions of bonds such that the ratio is J(=J. / J,). ForS=1/2 and S=l, we estimate the critical value J. such that Neel order exists forJ.< J< l, while not for 0< J< J.. The results of the spin wave theory suggest that J.isvery small (.7.< 10 ') and a disordered phase exists only in quasi-one-dimensionalregions. Then we treat interchain couplings as a nxean field. By this approximation J.is derived from J.= (27...) ' where z.. is the staggered susceptibility of a chain. We esti-mate '7,.. for finite chains by the exact diagonalization of the hamiltonian and ex-trapolate to infinite systems. Our estimations are J.=O for S= 1 / 2 and .7.>0.025 forS=l.
