Theory of Ballistic Transport through a Constriction-Quantization of Conductance

Electron transport in a two-dimensional system with a constriction is investigated,and the criterion for the quantization of the conductance is discussed on the basis ofthe results of numerical calculations on a model. It is shown that the existence of along quasi-one-dimensional channel with parallel boundaries is not the essential con-dition for the quantization.
