Effects of Tunneling on the Properties of Metallic Fine Particles

The conditions for observing quantum size effects in metallic fine particles arediscussed in reference to the tunneling of electrons between the particles. The effects oftunneling are shown to be not so large as to destroy the energy level discreteness inparticles if they are separated even by very thin layers of an i?xsulator.
