Selective Excitation of Acetylene by Ion-Impact

Enersv-loss sr>ectra of H", He" and 81 ions scattered by acetytene (C.H.)molecules have been studied in the collision energies between 1 and 2.5 keV at ascattering angle of O'. It was observed that, in accordance with the Wigner spinrule, the H'-impact on acetylene induced only the singlet-singlet (S-S) transitionsof acetylene while the He"-impact and the Hf-impact induced both the S-S andthe singlet-triplet (S-T) transitions of acetylene. A difference was found betweenthe He"-impact and the II.F-impact excitation of the S-T transitions of acetylenein that the lowest-lying triplet state 'a 'I: was preferentially excited by the He"-impact but both the lowest and second lowest triplet states, the ; and the b 'l.,were excited by the H7-impact.
