A new mass spectrometer having a helical trajectory is described. The instrument has such a simple structure that the ion source and the collector are on a straight line along the direction of the analysing magnetic field which is given by a solenoid, although some devices are necessary to separate particular ions from the others which enter the analyser simultaneously and to increase the ion current. For a performance test an alkali metal ion source of single filament type was used. Two isotopes of lithium could be completely separated, and those of potassium were separable in strong magnetic field. Although resolution is relatively low, the instrument is considered to have convenient uses, owing to its simple structure and axial symmetry.
