When the temperature of an incandescent tungsten surface exposed to water vapor is rapidly lowered, the partial pressure of hydrogen produced by interaction of the water molecules with the tungsten surface is found to show a momentary increase contrary to expectation. When the surface temperature before the lowering is above 1400℃, two transient peaks appear; one appears in the vicinity of 1400℃, and the other at about 700℃. In order to explain the occurrence of the transient peaks, a mechanism is proposed, which assumes some consecutive elementary processes including liberation of atomic hydrogen from the surface and its recombination on the vessel wall. Elementary kinetic calculations according to the mechanism reproduced a pressure change curve in reasonable agreement with the experimental one. This result leads to a conclusion that atomic hydrogen is liberated through two separate processes occurring in different temperature ranges.
