Lower Hybrid Drift Instability Driven by Cross-Field Electron Current and Ion Heating

A strong radial electric field E, is produced in an inhomogeneous plasmacolumn under a weak magnetic field B by applying a dc voltage between a cathodeand a heating anode of hollow cylindrical type. Then, the lower hybrid driftinstability is excited by a cross-field current due to E.>< B drift of electrons.Experimental results of the instability are explained by the dispersion equation,where a negative energy wave of a drifting electron beam interacts with the lowerhybrid wave in the backgrotmd plasma. As the instability is developed, the radialelectron current increases and hot tons up to 1 keV are produced.
