Parametric Excitation of Bernstein Waves in Plasmas

The parametric excitation of the Bernstein waves with the frequency f_d are observed experimentally when the intense pump signal with the frequency f_<pump>=(2/m)f_d (m=1, 3 and 5) is applied to a nonuniform plasma in a magnetic field. The threshold values are very small as compared with those expected from the theory, though they increase with m. As the pump field increases, the amplitude of the excited signal becomes saturated and a last the signal disappears. The frequency conservation among the pump and excited signals is certified. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of Mathieu equation derived from the electrostatic hydrodynamic approximation, assuming the spatial gradient of the electron density.
