Ultrasonic Properties of Pure and Ag-Doped Amorphous Chalcogenides (As_2S_3, As_2Se_3)

The lattice (elastic and relaxation) properties of the amorphous chalcogenides,mainly on pure and Ag-doped As.S3, have been studied by measuring ultrasonicvelocities and attenuations. The o bserved drastic increase (5 -10 %) of the velocitywith a small amount (1 at.%) of doped Ag in As.S3 has been attributed to itsanomalous behaviors of the density, the anharmonicity and the bulk modulusdue to the doping. The experimental temperature dependences of shear waveattenuation x,(T) and of high-frequency electrical conductix'ity o(T) in As.S. areboth well represented by exp ( -E./kt) with approximately the same activationenergy Ej.?O.1 eV. The mechanism of the phonon-assisted hopping of As -Sdipoles (activated by thermal phonons) has been shown to explain the identicaltemperature dependence for a.(7') and o(T). Thus, these are the two manifestations,the mechanical relaxation (a) and the dielectric relaxation (a), of the same origin,i.e., due to the hopping of ions, perhaps mainly S ions.
