Ultrasonic Velocities of K_2PbCu (NO_2)_6 near the Cooperative Jahn-Teller Phase Transitions

The sound velocities in K.PbCu(NO.), were measured in the vicinity of itsstructural phase transition point of 281 K. The velocity of the transverse soundwave traveling along the [1104 direction with the polarization vector in the [1104direction was fotmd to follow the Curie-Weiss type law; V.j..g,=F7.....VJ,....(T./(T -7'.)), where FW[11O]=l.l3Xl0'I11/SCC, FJ....).=2.52Xl0"m/secand 7'g=l72.8 K. The anomalous behavior in the sound velocity was atrributedto the linear coupling between the strain and one of the order parameters associ-ated with local distortion.
