The Crystal Structure of (CH_3)_3NHCdBr_3 in the Partially Disordered(√<3>×√<3>)R30°-Phase

Successive structural phase transitions in a linear chain compound (CH,),NHCdBr,(TrMCB) have been studied by X-ray diffraction. The structure of the('5 X J)7?30' phase, which exists above 379 K is refined by a block-diagonal leastsquares method; the final 7?-factor is 0.065. The structure belongs to the hexagonalspace group P62m, where a partial disorder of CdBr, chains occurs; the chains arerotated in antiphase in two of the three sublattice sites, while in the third site thechains are in disorder and can be represented by a superposition of the states in theformer two sites. A close resemblance to the "partially disordered state" which wasrecently found in some triangular Ising antiferro-unagnets is referred.
