The previously-unexplained anotnalous ramp-like linear optical absorptionthreshold of rare-gas impurities in alkali metal hosts f(Q -Q.) ' with pz -13is shown to be a nattural consequence of an extra-orbital relaxation model whichleads to the simultaneous creation of a conduction-band hole and a conductionelectron in the final states.
