Three systems of weakly nonlinear envelope eqtrations for a f'undaznental unode and its fourthharrnonic of two-dirnensional capillary gravity waves out deep water are derived. These systettasare used to investigate stability of progressive periodic waves of permanent f'orm. It is found thatthe pertnanent waves in which the fund?tmental rnode and its f'ourth harunonic are of the sameorder are unstable. 1VIodttlational instability in whicla the dominant mode in the eigenf'unctionis near the fotmrth harnaonic is fotrnd in the third order approximation. Furtherrnore, instabilityrelated to the fotrrth hartnonic resonance is found in the fourth order approximation.
