We report measurenxents on a series of vnltrastnall AN single tunnel junctions. The leads weremade of either multiple j unctions connected in variotrs ways or high-resistance NiCr films, The ef-fects of tunnel resistance and lead resistance were studied extensively for norrnal-naetal junctionsand Josephson .junctions. The dependence of the Coulounb blockade in normal-metal jtunctionson those resistances was compared quantitatively with theories. The observed tunnel-resistancedependence in Josephson junctions was explained LXS a manifestation of the dissipative phasetransition predicted by the theory. The effect of lead resistance in Josephson .junctions was alsostudied.
