The criterion for the formation of a stable positive Jon sheath is calculated for an arbitraryelectron velocity distribution function to obtain the ion flux. The cases of lVIaxwel1ian andDruyvesteyn distributions are discussed for comparison. A diagnostic method for the positiveion density from the measured kinetic energy distribution by using the positive ion current regionin the probe characteristic is suggested. The ton current density extractable from an ion sourcecan also be estimated. Examples based upon experimental data are given to study the effect ofnon-Maxwellian velocity distri bution.
